6.20 Release Candidate 3 - [now released see downloads page]

I need as many people as possible to test this ASAP!

The expiration date for this client is still 2008/08/02. Installer, PreferencePane, and all client features up to and including 6.20 - internally called 6.12.16, universal binaries on everything. It's important this is easy for the non-geek user, so please help test. For those doing command line installs, this has that too in /Applications/Folding@home.app/fah6 and yes, we will have a fah6/mpiexec only .tgz shortly, lets find any bugs first please.

The viewer and screensaver are not included at this time. An update will be made when that functionality is supported and working correctly.

6.12.16
  • Extra parameters, core address (ignore for now), and machine ID added to System Preferences. On Intel systems, SMP is automatic for 4 CPU, but you may want the "-smp 8".
  • PrefPane forced to 10.4 conpatability

Not sure I did this right but it appears to be working. I installed the package and then copied the fah6/mpiexec over to my InCrease directory and restarted it. It looks like it is running (resuming the current WU) without a problem. MacbookPro running 10.5.4.

Yea, that's +1 for the standalone working... hoping for a lot more installer tests before Friday tho...

Just ran the installer and looked at the results in InCrease, looks like its going fine.

Grabbed a WU and started with no probs.

Running on a 2.5ghz Macbook Pro and it correctly got a SMP unit for me.

Oh the installer worked as well - I did the complete install and checked that out before going back to my regular WU under InCrease.

A few hours ago, I did a complete, regular install of the beta on a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz (2 GB RAM) that had no installed fah software installed before. No problems with installation and it seems to run fine.

From the installed app package on the MacBook Pro, I copied fah6 over to my Power Mac G5 2 GHz (2.5 GB RAM). On this computer, the folding software had been installed by InCrease in the past, so the folders are named according to the InCrease “naming conventions”. I replaced the three fah6 files ~/Library/InCrease/cpu1/fah6, ~/Library/InCrease/cpu2/fah6 and ~/Library/Application Support/InCrease/bin/fah6 with the new fah6 file, and started folding again. Folding started where I had stopped it. And everything seems to work fine.

By the way: Both machines run OS X 10.5.4.

I’m wondering whether it really makes sense for you if I switch on two old Macs just to see if they work fine with the beta, too. It’s a Power Mac G4 500 MHz (1 GB RAM) and a PowerBook G3 400 MHz (256 MB RAM) — both under OS X 10.4.11. They certainly aren’t very useful for the folding research anymore as they are clearly outdated. However, if you do like to get the feedback if they work fine with the beta, I could switch them on for one unit.

Yes, please test the PPC machines. You're right they are VERY slow, so just have them do one WU, but I need the test feedback.

Not so good news about the beta working (rather not working) on both older Macs under OS X 10.4.11:

Power Mac G4 500 MHz (1 GB RAM): I could install the beta the way you described it. After installation, I could set it up in System Preferences. I could launch it from there afterwards. It starts, the process shows up in Activity Monitor, but after a while the process simply vanishes from Activity Monitor. I went back to fah part of System Preferences, told the client to stop (so the status in System Preferences didn’t reflect the already stopped process). Afterwards, I re-started the process in System Preferences (19:13 UTC in the log file). Same problem after a while.

This is the logfile (sorry for the length, but maybe you can even derive interesting clues from the number of attempts the computer did or something else that I don’t want to cut off; at least I cut off the core downloading part):

When it comes to the PowerBook G3 400 MHz (256 MB RAM), there is not much success either: I could install it the way you described it. However, after installation, I couldn’t open the fah part of System Preferences. Clicking it opens a message window saying (translation follows): “Fehler in den Systemeinstellungen – »Folding@home« konnte nicht geladen werden” (translation: Error in System Preferences — “Folding@home” could not be loaded.)

The installer won't let you run it from a network share.

Clean install on a PPC G4 1.25 Ghz running 10.5.4 went ok.

Clean install on a PPC G4 dual 1.25Ghz went ok, only one core started though.

Update on a Xserve 4core 2.66 went ok.

Update on a Mac Pro 4core 2.66Ghz went ok.

Update on a Mac Pro 8core 2.8Ghz failed. I did one thing different for this one, I disabled folding@home in the preference panel first. A clean instal worked. Adding 'smp 8' to the extra parameters line didn't do anything, still uses 4 cores.

Did the install on a 1.83 Ghz Mac Mini running OSX 10.5.4. Had previously been running the Client 6.10beta2 on this machine. I stopped the 6.10 Client but did not strip the components before Install of 6.20Release3. Install seemed to go cleanly.
The startup has been troubled. The client has restarted itself about 5 times for Client-Core Commnication Errors and for the detection of a 2nd running process. I killed a 2nd Fah6 process in the Activity Monitor but the Client just started a new 2nd process.
The Client has now settled down. It is running 2 Fah6 processes and it is writing local files for each process at the same approximate time. It is now taking 43 minutes for completion of 1% compared to 23 minutes with 6.10beta2. It has completed 7% without a restart.
I do not think I should be running 2 fah6 processes but that is the way it wants to run. Am I not configured properly????

The WU is Project: 2605 (Run 17, Clone 172, Gen 78)

Please advise. Do I abort or continue running?

There is no JOY in Minnesota regarding Client 6.20Release3 this morning. The WU that I discussed in my previous post continued to the 10% level and then it reported a File_IO_Error and decided to self destruct. As best as I can determine, it trashed the WU and has gone to Stanford and obtained a new WU.

I have stopped Folding@Home in the System Preferences Panel.

Please provide advice.......

The PPC client is not an SMP client, so that's as expected.

The a1 core can only do 4 cores, you'll have to wait for more a2 WUs, which are planned for the future, or so I'm told.

Aardvark: it does sound like you have 2 clients running, maybe another one from InCrease or a script?
